“Wat is er nou boeiender dan een mens?”
“Kijken naar een gezicht zonder er al te veel van te weten en dan niet te oordelen. Gewoon kijken wat je kunt aflezen aan de buitenkant en dat vertalen in verf. Zonder model kan ik niet. Het is mijn inspiratie en daar begint het schildersproces. Alleen gaat het me er niet om mensen mooier te maken of ze precies na te schilderen. Het is wat ik er in zie, gebaseerd op wat ik zie. En ik denk dat als je de buitenkant heel goed bestudeert, je vanzelf de binnenkant pakt. Als schilder kun je dat. Het impliceert wel een oorspronkelijk kijken, met verbazing en een open blik. Waarbij ik mezelf blijf afvragen wat ik zie en op wat voor een manier ik dat in godsnaam kan vertalen. Welke kleur kies ik en hoe schilder ik die vorm? Dat alles vind ik ter plekke uit, iedere keer weer opnieuw. Alsof ik voor de eerste keer schilder en het daarna nooit meer doe.”
“What could be more fascinating than a human being?”
“Looking at a face you don’t know too well, without judgement. Just seeing what you can read from the outside and rendering that impression in paint. I can’t do without a model. That’s where I find my inspiration, where the process of painting begins. But for me it’s not about flattery or depicting a person with pinpoint accuracy. It’s about what I sense in someone, based on what I see. I think that by studying their outward appearance minutely, you inevitably capture what’s inside. As a painter, you have that gift. But it does involve a return to something pure, an ability to look with wonder and an open mind. It’s a process in which I keep asking myself what it is I’m seeing and how on earth I can express it in paint. Which colour to choose, how to get that shape down. I come up with all this on the spot, from one moment to the next. Like I’m painting for the very first time. And the last.”
